I love being a writer and getting to spend time talking to people. Ed Smith is a retired UW-Stout professor who was delighted to talk about the Great Adventure. Next week I get to tour a winery. Is being a writer fun or what?

Yes, you can make money writing even as you wait for the world to discover your magnificent book. Since the mid-1980s, I have spent much of my professional life writing (and winning) government grants and proposals, from private sector agencies, county government, states, military and the federal government. I have also won a number of writing contests over the years. Academy of American Poets is accepting poems for its Walt Whitman Award through November 15. Prize is $5,000, publication and a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center. $25 entry fee. See www.poets.org/whitman

Chautauqua is accepting fiction entries through November 15

Human Rights Watch is accepting applications through December 8 for its Hellman/Hammett Grants of $10,000 each for poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. The grants are for victims of political persecution, and emergency grants are available as well. See http://www.hrw.org/
